Modernising an Existing Purpose Built Facility
Beattie Air was engaged to deliver the mechanical services upgrade of the Air New Zealand Hangar 1 Cleaning Bay at Christchurch Airport as designed by BECA. The existing space was already a purpose built cleaning bay, originally fitted out around 50 years ago. The project scope was to refit and upgrade the outdated system with modern, high performance mechanical solutions.
Scope of Works
Beattie Air carried out the following supply and installation works:
-
Trane Roof-Mounted Heating Unit – To provide heating only
-
Cookes Air Handling Unit (AHU) – Connected to ducted supply for consistent airflow
-
Pacetti Buffer Tanks – 4000 litres total capacity for thermal energy storage
-
Nederman Local Exhaust Hoods – Effective extraction of wash bay vapours and contaminants
-
Custom Control System – Installed and commissioned by Setpoint Solutions for standalone operation
Subcontractor Coordination
We coordinated closely with the following subcontractors to ensure a smooth and compliant install:
-
Careford Mechanical – Pipework and hydraulics
-
SMS – Ducting and metal fabrication
-
IES – Electrical services
-
Setpoint Solutions – Controls and commissioning
With Armitage Williams managing the build and BECA handling the design, our team ensured seamless mechanical integration with the existing structure and services.
Project Outcome
The refit successfully modernised a critical facility without disrupting operations in other parts of the hangar. The new heating and ventilation system now provides reliable performance that meets current compliance standards while extending the useful life of this high-use cleaning bay.
